The Magic in my Work
Colours and harmonies of colours are essential to me. I love working with pure gold in my paintings as well as on my sculptures, because it displays the light in so many different shades. Gold is as precious as life.
Inspiration and Process
Sensual conception is a very personal process. It is like collecting stories with lots of illustrations. I always start my work with a very personal experience and then in the progress of developing my works I change it to a more general context. That is why all my works are very individual. I often start with a small note, just words. I study the objects and people around me and I draw a lot, touch things, create clay models.
When I start my paintings I ignore everything I learned before and just work on the composition by applying the different layers of oil paints, pigments and gold to recreate the initial mood or emotion that started me off. This opens up my private world full of fantasies, contradictions and impossibilities. I visualise the final piece of art from the beginning but open myself up to possible changes, adaptations. I often use my finger tips and palms to place the colours on the canvas. When the paint gets thick I love carving into it, using all sorts of tools ranging from twigs to forks to finger nails. I use pigments to either make the different shades more intense or to create a velvety effect. I always use pure gold to finish my compositions.
When I make my sculptures, I start with sketches followed by small models. When I work on the sculpture itself, I open up to further variations and interpretations and create a completely new shape. For me there is no difference between painting and sculpting. It is all very sensual.
I use polyurethane for the core of my sculptures. This gets laminated with fibre glass to allow me to paint the surface. I always apply pure gold, but for better weather protection I use acrylic paints and a car varnish on top.
I learn a lot during the making of my paintings and sculptures. This physical and cognitive process often is inspiration enough for the next project.
